# Memory module

The memory module lets coding agents record information that should survive a coding session, the same idea as the local memory features in tools like Claude Code, except that it survives restarts and is centralised for a project.

Memories are reported through the `remember` MCP tool. Both the tool description and `AGENTS.md` instruct agents to report when they judge that something is worth keeping.

{% hint style="warning" %}
That instruction is not always enough. The feature is early, and an explicit "store memories" step or slash command may turn out to be necessary, so that the agent is told to record rather than left to decide. Both approaches are worth trying.
{% endhint %}

Memories are either per-repository or project-global. Project-global ones are compiled into a list of at most 20 items and included in `AGENTS.md`. Per-repository ones are compressed the same way and included in the `repo_insights` tool result.

{% hint style="info" %}
Compiling memories into a short list uses an LLM. A cheap model does the work, but this is a new feature, so watch what it costs on your corpus rather than assuming.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.visdom.virtuslab.com/visdom-context-fabric/user-guide/memory-module.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
